Health officials confirm that a Michigan resident who received an organ transplant has died from rabies. The transplant operation happened in an Ohio hospital in December. The patient died in January. An investigation revealed the patient contracted rabies through the transplanted organ. Rabies is a deadly viral disease that can spread to humans by coming in contact with saliva or blood from infected animals. The illness can be fatal if it's not quickly treated. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says fewer than 10 people die annually from rabies in the U.S.
